Game Studio Program

Learn to run your own studio! The Game Studio Program is a one-year program for game developers who wish to take the step of starting their own studio. You can either apply as a complete team, an individual representing a team, or as a solo developer. You will be provided with a workstation, and the program will simulate the functioning of a studio environment at an office in Malmö.

During the program, you will develop your game independently while we teach you everything you need to know about starting a small game studio, covering topics such as project management, team building, pitching, finance, legal aspects, and securing funding. We collaborate closely with Game Habitat, Dataspelscentrum, and numerous other industry stakeholders to ensure you remain connected with the industry throughout the program.

Who do we target?

This program is for you or a whole team that is dedicated to start their own game studio. Whether you are undertaking this program alone while your teammates work remotely or your entire team is participating, this program is designed for you.

  • You are a game developer capable of working on your project independently.
  • You or your team already has a project or an idea.
  • Your goal is to run a small game studio, not just creating a game.
  • You want to build a community for smaller game studios.

We welcome all kinds of game projects, and your idea doesn't need to be commercially viable, and we want to nurture artistry. However, you should be able to articulate the impact of your project idea and its contribution to society.

Application

You will submit a maximum two-minute video presenting your background in game development and a project description. Your project description can be a video, images, text or a combination, most preferably a pitch document. If your project is in the idea phase you should include a description of the project and how your team can finish the project.

You apply individually, but if you work as part of a team the whole is welcome to apply using the same project description.

You can apply through either of our schools, Skurup or Fridhem. Your application is not affected by what school you choose to apply to, it's all the same program.

The Program

This program is conducted by Skurup/Fridhem Folkhögskola and is built on the values of Folkhögskola. This means it's a value-driven organization, which enables us to focus on your creativity with an emphasis on creating great and engaging play experiences.

The program will be conducted within an agile framework, with two-week sprints. Each sprint will revolve around a specific theme related to running a studio. You will receive assignments aimed at completing essential tasks for your company, such as creating a project budget, roadmap, conflict management strategies, and more. While attendance is mandatory, this program is also built for you to manage your own time in the way that’s best for your studio.

Autumn Semester – Studio Focus

During the autumn semester, our focus will be on the internal aspects of running a game studio, including production, conflict management, playtesting, economy, and community building with other small game studios.

Spring Semester – Out in the World

The spring semester will emphasize getting out into the world. This will include activities such as pitching, market analysis, marketing strategies, understanding law and contracts, and more.

You will work closely with the other participants in the program, sharing knowledge and experiences. This program is not set to be a closed environment; instead, we help you engage with the industry, creating a stronger network and making space for you in the indie game community.
